The short version
- You can browse Venuo without an account and without giving us your name or email.
- We collect personal details only when you give them to us: by signing up for the weekly rundown, sending us an event to list, asking to be verified, or emailing us.
- We do not sell your details. We use one advertising cookie, Meta’s pixel, and only if you agree to it.
What we collect
When you sign up for the weekly rundown, we keep your email address, the date, and which part of the site you signed up from. We then email you a link to confirm the address is yours, and you are only on the list once you confirm. We keep the date you confirmed, too.
When you send us an event to list, we keep your name, your email address, your phone number if you give one, the organiser’s name and website or social page, the details of the event, and the images you upload.
When you ask to be verified, we keep the organiser’s name, your name and email address, and anything else you choose to give us: a phone number, a website or social page, a registration number, and your message.
When you email us, we keep your email address and whatever you tell us.
Like most websites, our servers record technical details of each visit, such as your IP address, your browser type, the page requested and the time. With each form you send, we also store your IP address and browser type, which helps us stop spam and abuse.
We measure how the site is used: which pages are opened, what is searched for, which links are followed (for example to an organiser’s ticket page), and roughly where a visit came from, such as a search engine or a shared link. We also note the kind of device and browser, its language and its time zone.
We do this ourselves, without cookies. To count visitors without knowing who they are, we turn your IP address and browser type into a scrambled code that changes every day and cannot be turned back into either. The IP address is not stored with these records, and nothing in them can follow you from one day to the next.
If you accept advertising cookies, Meta’s pixel also runs on the site. It sends Meta the pages you open, your IP address, your browser details and a cookie that recognises your browser. Our cookie policy explains it in full.
Our emails tell us whether they were opened and which of their links were followed. Each email carries a tiny image that your email app loads when you open it, and its links pass through our server for a moment on the way to where they lead. We record when that happens, and the kind of email app or device, against the email we sent you. We do not record your IP address. If you would rather we did not know when you open an email, set your email app not to load images automatically.
What we use it for
- To send you the weekly rundown, if you asked for it.
- To review, publish and manage event listings, and to contact the organiser about them.
- To decide verification requests and show the verified badge.
- To reply when you contact us.
- To keep the site secure and to stop spam and abuse.
- To understand, in total and not person by person, which events and pages people are interested in, and what they look for and do not find.
- To see which of our emails are useful, from whether they are opened and which links in them are followed.
- If you accept advertising cookies, to measure whether our ads on Facebook and Instagram bring people to Venuo, and to show those ads to people likely to be interested.
We send the weekly rundown, and use Meta’s pixel, only with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. For everything else we rely on what is needed to provide a service you asked for, or on our legitimate interest in running and protecting the directory.
What is public
An event listing is public. When we publish an event, its details and images appear on Venuo, together with the organiser’s name.
Event pages can also show an organiser’s contact email, phone number and website, so that people attending can reach them. If you are an organiser and do not want a contact detail shown, tell us when you send the listing or email us, and we will remove it.
Email addresses on the weekly rundown list are never published.
How long we keep it
- The weekly rundown: if you never confirm your email address, we delete it 30 days after we sent the link. Once you confirm, we keep it until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only a record that the address unsubscribed, so that we do not email it again by mistake.
- Listings and verification requests: for as long as the event or organiser is on Venuo, and for a reasonable time afterwards for our records.
- Emails you send us: for as long as we need to deal with your request.
- Records of visits to the site: about six months. After that only daily totals are kept, which say nothing about any one visit.
- Server logs: for a limited time, by our hosting providers.
- What Meta’s pixel collects: Meta keeps it under its own policy. The cookie in your browser lasts 90 days from your last visit, unless you withdraw your consent or clear it sooner.
You can ask us to delete your information sooner. We will, unless the law requires us to keep it.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have the right to:
